What is the TOEFL Test?

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) measures the ability of non-native speakers of English to use and understand English as it is spoken, written, and heard in middle, high school, college and university settings.

The TOEFL test is offered in different formats depending on a test taker’s location.

The Internet-Based TOEFL Test

The TOEFL Internet-based Test (TOEFL iBT) tests all four language skills that are important for effective communication: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The test helps students demonstrate that they have the English skills needed for success.

What is the benefit of an Internet-based Test?

TOEFL iBT emphasizes integrated skills and provides better information to institutions about students’ ability to communicate in an academic setting and their readiness for academic coursework. With internet-based testing, ILP can capture speech and score responses in a standardized manner.

Online registration and online score reporting make it easier for students to register for TOEFL iBT and receive their test scores.

Why take the TOEFL Test?

Most people take the TOEFL test as a prerequisite for admission into colleges and universities where English is used or required.  In addition, many government, licensing, and certification agencies and exchange and scholarship programs use TOEFL scores to evaluate the English proficiency of people for whom English is not their native language.

Who should take the TOEFL Test?

Nonnative English speakers at the 11th grade level or above should take the TOEFL test to provide evidence of their English proficiency before beginning academic work.  The test content is considered too difficult for students below the 11th grade.

Many institutions report that they frequently do not require TOEFL test scores of certain kinds of international applicants. These include:

  • nonnative speakers who hold degrees or diplomas from post secondary institutions in English speaking countries (e.g. the United States, Canada, England, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand)
  • nonnative speakers who have successfully completed at least two-year course of study in which English was the language of instruction
  • transfer students from institutions in the United States or Canada whose academic course work was favorably evaluated in relation to its demand and duration.
  • nonnative speakers who have taken TOEFL test within the past two years
  • nonnative speakers who have successfully pursued academic work at schools where English was the language of instruction in an English speaking country for specific period, generally two years.

Students should contact their prospective institutions directly concerning their specific admission requirements.

What our TOEFL classes offer:

  1. Review of all four parts of the TOEFL:
    • Listening Comprehension: Learn idiomatic verbs and expressions, learn how to determine what a speaker means by recognizing American forms of agreeing, disagreeing, suggesting, etc.
    • Structure and Written Expression:  Review until you understand noun, adjective, and adverb clauses, parallel structure, articles, prepositions, and more-everything that is tested on the TOEFL.
    • Vocabulary in Context and Reading Comprehension: Lean how to determine the main idea of a passage, how to recognize distractors, how to use context to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words, and how to determine the probable content of preceding and succeeding paragraphs.
    • Instruction and practice for preparing for the TOEFL essay:  In addition to reviewing the criteria for writing essays, we will look at copies of actual TOEFL essays that have been scored and examine them to determine how they were scored.  In addition to learning how to write essays, you will also learn how to edit them.
  2. Review of idioms that frequently occur on the TOEFL
    • We will cover the idioms that are in your TOEFL materials (text and tapes) and more.
  3. Two of three institutional TOEFL tests included in the tuition to help you practice for the Computer Based Test. Also, more testing with review of wrong answers on in-class tests.
  4. Affordable tuition and moderate size classes limited to 20 students.
  5. Computer-Based Instruction and Practice Software.  In addition to the classroom time spent on the computer, students are encouraged and expected to schedule additional hours in the computer lab. There is no limit to the number of hours and no additional charge.
  6. Guarantee: If you don’t significantly improve your score, the next class is free! (provided, of course, that you attend the classes and do the homework)
